Comprehensive Review of The Best Credit Cards for Redeeming Frequent Flyer Miles – Enrich Miles and KrisFlyer Miles
I am well known for producing freaking long winded but damn good quality articles; and if you are a regular reader of mine, you just can’t get enough of them right? Hahaha. This article covers many subjects and as usual, you are sure to learn a thing or two………… or maybe nothing at all. And since this is my blog, in order to allow you to see and comprehend where I am coming from, it is only naturally that I also share and touch on matters relating to my personal life that gives me “shiok sendiri” sensations, i.e. Bragging Rights, hahaha.
Many of you are aware that I have been using my credit cards’ reward points to redeem Enrich Miles for the last 3 years or so. With the FREE Enrich Miles earned from my credit card transactions, I have redeemed FREE Business Class air tickets to/from Los Angeles for my eldest son and to/from Europe for my dad, mum, wife, eldest son, eldest daughter, sister and myself worth more than RM100K.
I have published many articles relating to Enrich Miles, but the most recent are as follows:
Click here to read my article titled My Paris, New York and London Trip 2014. This article covers many topics and may be useful for those who are intending to visit London, Paris and New York. Thanks to my lucky star, I managed to redeem 2 FREE Return Business Class tickets KL/Europe when Enrich Miles was having a 50% Sale! Yes, the best time to redeem your Enrich Miles for FREE ticket(s) is when Enrich Miles is having a Sale.
Click here to read my article titled My London Trip 2015. In this article you will learn that it may be cheaper to get an Oyster Card for the Tube instead of buying a Day-Ticket. And where you can get fantastic Indian food in London which also happens to be the 1st Indian Restaurant in the world to be awarded a Michelin Star.
As you are aware by now, I just went to London again in 2015 with my uncle and it was kind of boring since it was my second trip there. The thing is, I have to go again this year! The story is like this…..
Back in 2013, my eldest daughter started her undergraduate degree in Melbourne where the university is ranked amongst the World’s Top 10 Pharmacy Universities. And since the cost of boarding is freaking expensive in Melbourne (single bedroom apartment in Melbourne CBD can cost around AUD320/week), I thought I might as well send my two younger children to attend high school in Melbourne too and pay a little bit more in rent. But my two younger children need a maid as they can’t cook and they are so spoiled that they will never ever vacuum the floor or clean the toilet; therefore, I had no choice but to send a maid there to do the housework. And you guys know lah, I am very blessed, my children’s maid works for FREE and she is pretty, intelligent, bloody good cook and also happens to be my loving wife, hahaha.
My youngest Dragon daughter was given the very first iPad when it was launched back in 2010 (when she was 10 years old) and as such was exposed to God knows what kind of information, so much so, she thinks she’s the smartest person on earth.
My Dragon daughter started Year 7 in a Private High School in Melbourne back in late January 2013. Then came year end, we were invited to her school prize giving day, which initially we declined as we were flying back to KL that same night. But luckily we went as she was nominated for 6 Awards and won awards for Maths, Science and to everyone’s astonishment even Performing Arts (the crowd went WOW! Unexpected for an Asian I guess, hahaha). And the climax was she won the Year 7 Dux Title (DUX – from the Latin word meaning leader or from the English Dictionary top pupil of his/her class/school).
Click here to read my article My Bragging Right 2014 – where I also bragged about my eldest son being accepted into an Ivy League University, my eldest daughter who is forever watching KPop managed to get an ATAR score of 99.x and got High Distinction for all her subjects in her Uni 1st year (and was subsequently given a scholarship for her 2nd year) and my second son who was in Year 10 in a private high school also got straight As and won himself a scholarship for Year 11.
And in 2014, my youngest daughter won a place into the Best High School in the entire state of Victoria for Year 9. She sat for an entrance exam while still in Year 8 sometime in late 2014 where she had to compete with more than 4000 other students. But, initially, she refused to go to this new school in 2015! She had spent close to 2 years in her previous private high school and have made many friends and is well liked by the teachers. Heck, not everyone has the privilege and brains to enter this new school where more than half the Year 12 students achieved ATAR score of above 95 and 80% of the students score ATAR Score above 90 every single year! So, I was not going to let this opportunity of her attending the best high school in Melbourne slip away. But, like I said, she thinks she is smarter than me and equally stubborn as me too. So, in order for both of us to have a win-win situation (boy, nowadays, not only do we need to feed our children but we as parents also have to treat them like our business associates), I offered her a new iPhone 6 and in return she would go to the new school. But she refused to accept my very generous offer! So, to up my offer, I offered her a trip to Europe (London & Paris) on Business Class in 2016 and after a few days, she finally accepted my offer and started Year 9 in this new school. Well, I am pleased to say that she is now in Year 10 and has adapted well in her new school and have made new friends and more importantly to me, she received an excellence award too on prize giving day in December 2015 (for her Year 9 where is competing with the best of the best students in Victoria unlike in Year 7 and 8).
To read more about my children education achievements and matters relating to education, please read the below articles:
Children Education Path – which type of primary or secondary school (government, private, International or Chinese) your child attends is not really of any importance as all of them will lead you to the same Top 100 universities on earth! By attending the best university also does not guarantee that our children will be “successful” in life. The things that guarantee our children succeed in life is their attitude which is moulded from his/her surroundings, the people they mix with and the most important and only significant thing is – one of the parents have to play the role of tiger mum or dad, hahaha.
Having a smart child also gives the parent(s) a headache. Good quality education that enables your child to work anywhere on earth is not cheap. If you are currently (or soon to be) a young parent, I would seriously suggest you stop burning money on materialist stuff and not opt for 0% installment plan with credit cards for stuff which will be obsolete (e.g. smartphone) but instead invest whatever money you have (tip – I have been reiterating – if Maybank goes below RM4, buy buy buy) so that when the time comes you are able to provide a quality education for your child.
The major set back of sending our children to a world class university is that they may be working half way around the world leaving us all alone when we are old and useless!
Last but not least, in the above mentioned article I disclosed the secret/foundation as to why my siblings (my two sisters attended very prestigious universities in the USA) and my children are “smart” plus where I got my sick imagination from, haha.
My Bragging Rights 2013 – In this article I mentioned that my eldest son and daughter both scored 10As in their SPM and both were accepted into Top Universities in USA even before their SPM results were out. My second son and youngest daughter both scored straight As for their PMR and UPSR respectively and both of them did not even attend a single tuition class!
My Bragging Rights 2014
My Bragging Rights 2015
My Bragging Rights 2016. In this article I once again mentioned that I have reached the pinnacle as for as collecting credit cards are concerned. I am now collecting Spirits, i.e. Cognac and Degrees.
UPDATE – I am proud to inform the world that my second son who is addicted to Online PC Games has been accepted into a World’s Top 50 Uni for Accounting 🙂 Once again here are my latest bragging rights:
My Eldest Son: Bachelor of Engineering from a Top 10 USA Engineering Uni & Master of Engineering from an Ivy League Uni. Currently he is in his second year pursuing his third degree, Doctor of Medicine (M.D) degree, in a World Top 50 Uni for Medicine in Australia. Update July 2016 – my son’s Uni is still ranked in the Top 50 in the world for medicine in 2016 by both Times and QS.
My Eldest Daughter: In her final year pursuing a Pharmacy Degree in a Uni ranked in the World’s Top 10 for Pharmacy in 2012, 2013 and 2014; but their ranking dropped in 2015 and now only World’s Top 20, hahaha. Update July 2016 – for 2016. QS ranked her Uni Top 4 in the world for Pharmacy!!!
My Second Son: Just entered uni pursuing a four years Double Degree program majoring in Accounting and the second major to be decided next year in a World’s Top 50 Uni for Accounting. Update July 2016 – my son’s Uni is now ranked Top 30 in the world for for Accounting. And I am happy to report for his 1st semester, he scored High Distinctions for all his subjects.
My Youngest Dragon GenZ Daughter: Year 10 in the Best High School in Melbourne and the entire state of Victoria, Australia. I am not kidding, in 2015, her school is the No.1 in the entire state of Victoria where 508 students sat for the Year 12 Victoria Certificate of Education (VCE) and the ATAR median score was 94.87!!!
My Pride and Joy Who Also Makes Me Poorer By The Day – I have accepted the fact that I can’t take my money to the grave; as such, I have no qualms about spending my money on my children’s education and furthermore it is them spending their future inheritance anyway, and it’s for their own good.
A Little Bit Of This and A Little Bit OF That – Volume I, Chapter VI – in this article I will tell you why the GenYs are so smart and who is responsible for it.
Coming back to the Europe trip in 2016 –
Why I offered my youngest daughter the trip to Europe in 2016? Two reasons. Firstly, I have to accumulate 382,500 (127,500 EM x 3) Enrich Miles in order to redeem for 3 return tickets KL/Europe – i.e. for my youngest daughter, my darling wife and me. Secondly, it can also be considered as her sixteenth birthday present 🙂
As of mid last year, I have already accumulated enough Enrich Miles for 4 return tickets to Europe on Business Class. But I did redeem one return Business Class KL/London to accompany my uncle to London in September 2015. Therefore, I still have enough Enrich Miles to redeem 3 return Business Class tickets KL/Europe.
Last December while having dinner with my children in Melbourne, we were talking about the trip to Europe next year; and out of the blue my wife said that my second son should go too (he’s attending uni in Feb 2016 and will have a month break in June/July) ). Then my second daughter also said she wanted to go as she has yet to visit London (she has been to Paris).
Well, to me, it is good that all of us go to Europe together as a family because time flies and soon all of them will be working or have a families of their own. But I wasn’t sure if I could accumulate enough Enrich Miles to redeem 5 return Business Class tickets KL/Europe. So I told my two older children that they will need to fly there on Economy and they agreed.
Actually, as of December 2015, I do have enough Enrich Miles to redeem for 3 return Business Class tickets KL/Europe and have a balance of at least 80K Enrich Miles. This means I will be able to upgrade my other two children to Business Class but one way only (40K Enrich Miles for one ticket one way). And in December last year, my wife had about 10K Enrich Miles but 5K was expiring, so I transferred all of them to my Enrich Account.
Sometime in Mid-February 2016, 2 of my older children paid for their 1st term Uni tuition fees with their supplementary Maybank 2 Cards Premier Visa Infinite. And fortunately, Enrich is currently having a promotion until end of February 2016 where we will earn 10% Extra Enrich Miles when we convert of credit cards’ reward points to Enrich Miles.
So on 19th February 2016, I called Maybank Premier Customer Service Toll Free Line to convert all my Treats Points to Enrich Miles. And when I checked on 21st February 2016, the Enrich Miles have been credited. I tell you, Maybank is really freaking efficient and I really like their excellent service. This is not the first time Maybank has credited the Enrich Miles into my account in less than a week, but every single time in the past. Not only that, click here to read my article titled A Little Bit Of This and A Little Bit Of That – Volume I, Chapter IV, where I mentioned I wanted to buy a Rolex GMT Master II Batman and called Maybank just before lunch to request for a second Temporary Increase in Credit Limit of RM50K (they have already approved a Temporary Increase of CL of RM30K weeks earlier) and they called me back just before dinner on the same day to inform me that my request had been approved!!!
Coming back to Enrich Miles, as of date, I now have about 600K Enrich Miles, which is slightly less than 637,500 Enrich Miles which are needed to redeem in full 5 return KL/London Business Class tickets 🙂
In my article titled Black Everose Rolex Yacht Master Versus BMW 118i F20 LCI Facelift (click here to read it) published back in August 2015, I mentioned that initially I wanted to get my eldest son a second hand car, but one thing lead to another, and I finally negotiated with a BMW salesman and was about to pay the deposit for a new BMW 118i for him. Only then did he tell his housemate that he was getting a car AND guess what? His housemate was also getting a car and they only had one covered car park allocated to both of them! So I wasted more than a week’s time and effort negotiating with salesmen from Honda, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mini and BMW for nothing. And in the Conclusion I asked my readers’ opinions if I should buy the new Rolex Everose Black Yacht Master for myself or a BMW for my son?
Well, my son has moved to another apartment this year and this time he booked the covered car park. However, since I did not buy the BMW 118i for him last year, I have used some of the money to buy more GIA certified diamonds and a new Rolex watch for my wife, hahaha. So, this time I only gave him a budget of AUD20K (half of the BMW 118i price).
And as I am drafting this article (started on 23rd February 2016), my son is currently at the Honda Dealership paying for his new Honda Limited Edition City with his Supplementary Visa Infinite and I just received an SMS alerting me that he has made payment for his new car. This means, in a couple of days time when the transaction is posted into my Maybank 2 Cards Premier Account, I will have enough Enrich Miles (converted from the new Treats Points) to redeem for 5 FULL return KL/London Business Class tickets 🙂
So, today’s FREE lessons are as follows:
1. Cost of transferring Enrich Miles from one account to another and cost to purchase Enrich Miles from Malaysia Airlines Berhad.
2. What options you have if you are short of Enrich Miles to Redeem in FULL for a Business Class Ticket.
3. What you must do first if you want to upgrade an Economy Class ticket to Business Class.
4. Advantage of using Cash + Miles versus Upgrade Economy to Business Class.
5. Is it cheaper to upgrade an Economy Class ticket to Business Class using Enrich Miles OR Redeem in Full for a Business Class ticket.
By performing the above analysis, it will also assist me to determine what is the best option for my coming Europe Trip 2016.
Now, if you are not aware, there was an Enrich Sale recently for Travel Period up to 20th May 2016 where one can upgrade to Business Class and get minimum 30% Discount. However, I did not get to enjoy the discount as we only intend to fly to Europe in June/July when my youngest daughter has her mid-year high school break.
FYI, June/July is peak period (summer in the Northern Hemisphere) and as such, the price of Economy Class ticket KL/London is higher than most other period.
Lesson No.1 – COST OF TRANSFERRING AND PURCHASING ENRICH MILES
Cost of transferring Enrich Miles
A couple of months back I transferred all my wife’s Enrich Miles (she had about 10K) to my account as she had about 5K Enrich Miles which was due to expire.
You can simply transfer your Enrich Miles to another person by Logging Into your Enrich Account but there will be fees involved. It will cost you RM0.04 for every Enrich Mile transferred plus a one time Administration Fee of RM40 and then add 6% GST.
To transfer 10,000 Enrich Miles from my wife’s account to mine = 10,000 x RM0.04 = RM400
And by adding the Admin Fee of RM40, the total now comes out to RM440.00
And you have to pay 6% GST; therefore the actual amount you need to pay to transfer 10K Enrich Miles equals to RM466.40
And of course I used my Maybank 2 Cards Premier AMEX Reserve to pay the transfer, and in this case, by paying the RM466.40 transfer fee, I will also earn myself about 466 Enrich Miles 🙂
Purchasing Enrich Miles (Enrich Express)
You can top up/purchase Enrich Miles where each Enrich Mile costs RM0.10. And once again there is a one off Administration Fee of RM40 and you will be imposed 6% GST. However, it seems that you are only eligible to purchase up to 30% of the required Enrich Miles for a particular redemption. I will soon show you that this Enrich Express option is useless.
Lesson No.2 – WHAT OPTIONS IS THE BEST IF YOU ARE SHORT OF ENRICH MILES TO REDEEM FOR A BUSINESS CLASS TICKET?
Assuming you want to redeem a Business Class ticket from KL to London where you will need 63,750 Enrich Miles but you only have 40,000 Enrich Miles in your account. Well, you have 4 options:
Option 1 – Transfer 23,750 Enrich Miles from another account to yours so that you have a total of 63,750 Enrich Miles to redeem for a full one way Business Class ticket KL to London.
To transfer 23,750 EM will cost you RM950 (23750 x RM0.04).
Add RM40 Admin Fee to the above and it will add up to RM990.
So with 6% GST, the total cost to transfer 23,750 Enrich Miles = RM1,049.40
Option 2 – Purchase Enrich Miles using Enrich Express. But in this case, you can’t redeem your ticket online and enjoy 15% discount! Therefore you will need 75,000 Enrich Miles to redeem for a one way Business Class ticket over the phone! In other words, you need to purchase 35,000 Enrich Miles!!! It’s a no brainer that this Option 2 will cost you more than Option 1 above (and Option 3 below too); as such I am not going to waste my time calculating the cost here.
Option 3 – Introducing Malaysia Airlines Cash + Miles.
Step 1 – Log In to your Enrich Account.
Step 2 – Click on Redeem Flight ==> Choose Flight
Step 3 – Key in flight details, click on Cash + Miles and then click Search. Take note that it is stated that you need minimum 1000 miles for Cash+Miles booking.
Step 4 – Select flight and then on the next screen, slide the ruler to 40,000 Enrich Miles. And from the image below, you will note two things – (1) you need to pay RM2299 extra which means (2) 1 EM = RM0.0968 with Cash+ Miles.
Therefore, it will be stupid of one to go with Enrich Express (in Lesson No.1) and pay RM0.10 for 1 Enrich Miles and an additional RM40 Admin Fee. Not only that, Enrich Express only allows you to purchase max 30% of the actual total Enrich Miles required to redeem a particular ticket. With Cash+Miles you only need minimum 1000 Enrich Miles AND you are entitled to the 15% discount for online redemption.
And based on this Option 3 Cash + Miles, your one way Business Class ticket KL to London would cost you RM3,017.90.
If you were to redeem in full using 63,750 Enrich Miles, the Business Class ticket would cost you only a mere RM718.90 for taxes and GST.
Coming back to Option 1 earlier, you need to pay RM1,049.40 to transfer 23,750 Enrich Miles into your account in order to redeem in full one way Business Class ticket KL to London. Add RM1,040.40 to the RM718.90 for taxes, the total comes out to RM1,768.30. Therefore, Option 1 is cheaper than Option 3 Cash+Miles, that is if you have got Enrich Miles to be transferred into your account.
Option 4 – Purchase a one way MH Basic Economy Class ticket KL to London and then call up Enrich and ask to be upgraded using 40,000 Enrich Miles.
Based on the above image, the one way Economy Class MH Basic ticket cost RM2,650 BUT take note the tax amount is only RM68.90 which is much less that the tax imposed on the Business Class ticket redeemed using Enrich Miles amounting to RM718.90 (refer to the image Option 3 Cash+Miles Step 4 above)!!!
So, I called up Enrich Customer Service to ask how much extra do I need to pay if I were to upgrade an Economy Class to Business Class using 40,000 Enrich Miles. And I was told I need to pay around RM300 to RM400 extra for KL to London and around RM700 to RM800 for London to KL.
In other words, if I have 40,000 Enrich Miles, I would end up paying around RM2950.90 to RM3050.90 to upgrade the Economy Class ticket to Business Class one way KL to London VERSUS Cash+Miles RM3,017.90. The difference in price for this example is negligible.
Having said the above, my cousin bought a return Economy Class ticket KL/London mid last year at the very last minute and it cost her dad about RM6K. And when she flew back from London, her dad upgraded her Economy Class ticket to Business Class using 40,000 Enrich Miles without needing to pay a sen extra! Maybe the reason was her return ticket was expensive in the first place.
Summary – if you have inadequate Enrich Miles to redeem a full Business Class ticket, first thing to do is transfer Enrich Miles (if any) from your family members to your account and then go redeem the Business Class ticket with Cash + Miles.
Lesson No.3 – WHAT YOU MUST DO FIRST BEFORE YOU PURCHASE YOUR ECONOMY CLASS TICKET WITH THE INTENTION OF UPGRADING TO BUSINESS CLASS USING ENRICH MILES
Most of the time, Malaysia Airlines only allocate two seats per day for upgrade for their flights into and out of London. With the exception of the flight which departs KLIA in the morning (MH4) for London where they may have more seats allocated for upgrade. Therefore, it is EXTREMELY important that you call Enrich Customer Service and confirm that there are seats available for upgrade to Business Class on the day you wish to fly before purchasing any Economy Class ticket.
And since you are calling to confirm availability of seats for upgrade to Business Class, it is also best that you ask if you need to pay any additional taxes/fees based on your MH Basic or MH Smart Economy Ticket.
And FYI, Promo tickets ARE NOT allowed to be upgraded to Business Class using Enrich Miles.
Lesson No.4 – ADVANTAGE OF USING CASH+MILES VERSUS UPGRADE ECONOMY CLASS TICKET TO BUSINESS CLASS
By using the Cash+Miles option, you are guaranteed a Business Class ticket on the spot versus upgrading an Economy Class where you may be put on the waiting list.
Please note that in the event you book with Cash + Miles at the very last minute, say a week before you intend to fly, more Enrich Miles may be required compared to if you were to book the same ticket months ahead before your departure date.
Lesson No.5 – IS IT CHEAPER TO UPGRADE AN ECONOMY TICKET TO BUSINESS CLASS USING ENRICH MILES OR REDEEM IN FULL FOR A BUSINESS CLASS TICKET?
Below is a table showing the Enrich Miles required to upgrade or redeem tickets with Enrich Miles Kuala Lumpur to/from Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur to/from London.
From the above table, you will need 30K and 40K Enrich Miles to upgrade a one-way Economy ticket to Business Class for Melbourne (Zone 4) and London (Zone 5) respectively.
As for redeeming in full for a one-way Business Class ticket over the phone by calling Enrich Customer Service, you will need 55K and 75K Enrich Miles for Melbourne (Zone 4) and London (Zone 5) respectively. If you redeem online, you will get 15% discount every day, therefore, the miles required will be reduced to 46,750 and 67,500 Enrich Miles respectively.
KL/MELBOURNE RETURN BUSINESS CLASS
Below image shows that one needs to pay RM2,113.90 and RM10,863.90 for a return KL/Melbourne Economy and Business Class tickets respectively. Click here to enlarge the image if necessary. As I mentioned in Lesson No.3, go and check if you’ll be imposed additional taxes/fees when you upgrade an Economy Class ticket to Business Class (total 60K EM needed for a return ticket) and then compare with Cash + Miles option.
The image below shows the amount one needs to pay for a Business Class ticket when he/she redeems in full or by using 60,000 Enrich Miles with the Cash + Miles option, i.e. RM1,060.00 and RM3,739.90 respectively. Once again click here to enlarge the image below if necessary. Therefore, if you ask me, if you have enough Enrich Miles, better to go redeem in full and save more than RM2K
So from the above, if you redeem in full using 93,500 Enrich Miles online, you only need to pay RM1,060.00 in taxes for a return KL/Melbourne Business Class ticket which is much cheaper than actually paying for an Economy Class ticket costing RM2,113.90!!!
Now, if you were to purchase a Business Class ticket outright, it would cost you RM10,863.90 for a return ticket. By using 93,500 Enrich Miles to redeem in full the same Business Class ticket, you will save RM9,803.90 (RM10,863.90 – RM1,060.00).
I shall now show you the “cash back” percentage we are getting back from using the fabulous Maybank 2 Cards Premier AMEX Reserve and Visa Infinite 5X Treats Points.
By using 93,500 Enrich Miles we save RM9,803.90, in order words, 1 Enrich Mile is worth RM0.10485
In my previous articles, I have shown you that we earn 1 Enrich Mile with every RM0.954 spent with the Maybank 2 Cards Premier 5X TP. I will once again prove it to you:
4770 Treats Points = 1000 Enrich Miles
In order to earn 4770 Enrich Mile with 5X TP, we need to spend RM954. Therefore, this means we earn 1 EM =for every RM0.954 spent. That’s less than a Ringgit lah!!! Which other credit card can earn you 1 Enrich Mile for every RM0.954 spent locally? Only the Maybank 2 Cards AMEX Reserve. That’s why I have bestowed the Maybank 2 Cards Premier as the World’s Best Credit Card!
Okay, now for the interesting part, what is the equivalent cash back? That’s the real important question.
Spend RM0.954 and we will earn 1 Enrich Mile which is worth RM0.10485 (in this case). Therefore the equivalent cash back is:
( RM0.10485 / RM0.954) x 100% = 10.99% CASH BACK!!!
You tell me, which credit card on earth will earn you 10.99% UNLIMITED cash back for any type of transaction including Petrol EVERYDAY? The answer is none other than the Maybank 2 Cards Premier AMEX Reserve.
KL/LONDON RETURN BUSINESS CLASS
The image below shows that one needs to pay RM4,435.90 and RM16,581.90 for a return KL/London Economy and Business Class ticket respectively. Click here to enlarge the image if necessary. As I mentioned in Lesson No.2 – Option 4, you may need to pay additional taxes of about RM1,000 to RM1,200 when you upgrade an Economy Class ticket to Business Class (total 80K EM needed for a return ticket). Once again, make sure you call Enrich Customer Service to reconfirm and then compare with Cash + Miles option.
The image below shows the amount one needs to pay for a KL/London Business Class ticket when he/she redeems in full and by using 80,000 Enrich Miles with the Cash + Miles option, i.e. RM2,492.90 and RM7,090.90 respectively. Once again click here to enlarge the image below if necessary. Therefore, once again, if you ask me, if you have enough Enrich Miles, it’s better to redeem in full and save more than RM4.5K!!!
From the Cash + Miles Option below with 80K Enrich Miles (same number required for upgrading an Economy to Business Class) where one needs to pay RM7,090.90, it may be cheaper to buy an Economy Class ticket costing RM4435.90 and pay the additional taxes of about RM1,200 (you have to go confirm this yourself). However, like I said in Lesson No.3, the Cash+Miles option guarantees you a Business Class ticket on the spot.
From the above, by using 127,500 Enrich Miles to redeem for a full Business Class ticket and pay RM2,489.00 in taxes, we can save RM14,092.90 (RM16,581.90 – RM2,489.00) when compared to purchasing a Business Class ticket outright.
Once again, let’s determine the equivalent cash back we get from using the fabulous Maybank 2 Cards Premier (5X TP Visa Infinite for overseas usage and 5X TP AMEX Reserve for both local and overseas)
By using 127,500 Enrich Miles we save RM14,092.90, in other words, 1 Enrich Mile is worth RM0.11053.
So this time, by spending RM0.954 with the Maybank 2 Cards Premier, we will earn 1 Enrich Mile which is worth RM0.11053. Therefore the equivalent cash back is:
(RM0.11053/ RM0.954) x 100% = 11.58% Cash Back which is even better than the KL/Melbourne example of 10.99%
EXTRA FREE Lesson No.6 – BEST TIME TO REDEEM ENRICH MILES IS WHEN ENRICH IS HAVING A SALE AND YOU GET THE SAME DISCOUNT WITH CASH + MILES OPTION
Earlier I showed you that Enrich was having a sale for their KL/London route. And guess what? The sale is applicable to for Cash + Miles option too.
For the purpose of this tutorial, I did take a screen shot of a Cash +Miles option before the Enrich Discount ended on 22 February 2015 where the discount is only applicable for travel before 20th May 2016.
The following image shows that with the Cash + Miles option where I have selected flights in the month of April (before 20 May 2016). And you will note that one only needs 105,000 Enrich Miles versus 127,500 Enrich Miles (15% discount applied when redeeming online).
Please note, 105,000 Enrich Miles is 30% off from the actual 150,000 Enrich Miles if you were to call Enrich and redeem a return Business Class ticket over the phone.
So from the above image, by using 80K Enrich Miles during Enrich Sale, one only needs to pay RM4,912.90 versus RM7,090.90 shown in lesson No.5. That’s a savings of RM2,178.
From the above FREE lessons, it shows that it is better to redeem in full for a Business Class ticket versus upgrading an Economy Class ticket or going with Cash + Miles option.
Considering the fact that I have enough Enrich Miles to redeem in full for 5 return Business Class tickets worth RM82,909.50 (RM16,581.90/person x 5) where I only need to pay RM12,445 (RM2,489 per person x 5) for taxes, it’s like as if Maybank just handed over to me RM70,464.50 FREE money so that my 3 children, wifey and I can fly on Business Class return KL/London!!!
Heck, the RM2,489.00 per person in taxes which I have to pay in order to fly on Business Class is even cheaper than if I were to buy a return Economy Class ticket outright.
Like I said at the beginning of this article, I promised to take my youngest daughter to Paris. Too bad Malaysia Airlines no longer flies to Paris, as such, I have to incur additional cost to buy train tickets back to London from Paris.
If you are a follower of my blog(s), you will know the reason why I have so many Enrich Miles, i.e. I use Maybank 2 Cards Visa Infinite which guarantees me 5X treats Points when I pay for my children’s tuition fees in Australia. I don’t use the AMEX Reserve to pay my children’s tuition fees because Maybank clearly stated that we will only earn 2X TP for Education, Insurance and Government related transactions.
Most universities in Australia and even UK do not impose additional surcharge when we use credit card to pay tuition fees. Therefore, if you have a child studying in Australia or UK, it is best that you get the Maybank 2 Cards Premier if you have not already and start earning yourself FREE Business Class tickets.
And by the time I reach this point, my son has driven off in his new car from the car dealership. The model he bought was the “Limited Edition” Honda City and he paid AUD18,500 for it (Drive Away Price – no need to pay a single sen more which include the car registration fee and the freaking nice number plate!). It comes standard with Reverse Camera, Leather Steering, Leather Gear Knob, Rear Spoiler and Alloy Wheels but no Fog Lights which is only fitted in the higher end model which cost about AUD5K to AUD6K more. The price he paid included Tinting and Reverse Sensor (in Australia, Reverse Sensors are optional and I reminded him to include the Reverse Sensor and Tinting cost when negotiating the final price of the car before he signed on the dotted line). I tell you, I was so surprised that the salesman managed to get a really freaking nice number plate for him for FREE (the number below 888 WWW has been photoshoped, the real number is actually equally freaking nice, 8X8 WXW). And the thing is, they registered the car in my son’s name with him paying AUD2K deposit only (last week over the phone with my credit card) and the balance AUD16.5K was once again paid using my credit card on the day my son collected the car today (23 Feb 2016).
Actually, my son did not even step into the dealership before today. My son negotiated the price with the Salesman over the phone; the salesman then emailed the contract to my son; and my son then emailed back the document after signing it. Subsequently someone from the Finance Department called my son for the Deposit Payment and my son simply gave him his Supp credit card number; and not long after that, I received a SMS alert from Maybank confirming that AUD2K has been charged to my son’s Supp card.
This is the second time I have bought my eldest son a black color car using my credit card. While he was in USA pursuing his first degree, he used his Supplementary Visa Infinite to pay for a second hand sports car which also earned me enough Enrich Miles to redeem for a one-way Business Class ticket KL/Los Angeles (that time MAS was still flying to LA) 🙂 Click here to read my article titled My Coupe and My Son’s Sports Car Paid With My Credit Cards. And in this article, I also posted photos of a much younger me with my Coupe while I was in the USA pursuing my degree in Engineering many many moons ago.
If you have been following my blog(s) for years, you will know the last time I was “conned” by him into getting him a sports car. You see, I agreed to buy the second hand sports car for him (while he was still pursuing his undergraduate degree) on condition that he goes to graduate school. But, in his final semester just before he obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree, he told me he’s not going to do his Masters in the USA!!! Anyway, I flew to the USA to attend his graduation and was a slave taking tons of his stuff back. And he flew back on Business Class as a graduation gift from me and I had to suffer in Economy Class. Click here to read my article titled My USA Trip 2013.
Two weeks or so after my son and I returned from USA in 2013, he suddenly out of the blue told me he got accepted into an Ivy League University to pursue a Masters in Engineering degree. I was like WTF! I wasted my bloody effort taking his stuff back and he had sold his sports car. Click here to read my article titled My Son Is Going To The USA Again on Business Class.
This time I am more than happy to pay for the car as he made me a happy man last year when he entered Med School after graduating from the Ivy League Uni. It took my son 6 years (starting from when he was in Form 5 at the age of 16) plus two degrees to finally realize that I was right all along that he should become a doctor! My eldest son will never hear the end of me saying to him, “I TOLD YOU SO” just to proof to him that I am smarter than him, hahaha. Click here to read my article titled My Pride and Joy Who Also Makes ME Poorer By The Day.
Last year, I bought him one of the most sought after watch on planet earth, i.e. the Rolex GMT Master II Blue Black Batman, as a birthday gift and as a reward for finally listening to me by going to medical school. Click here to see my son’s Rolex GMT Master II Batman and my Rolex GMT Master Pepsi side by side at My Money For Luxury blog.
Here are some photos (posted here the next day after I started drafting this article) of my son’s new car which was paid using his Supplementary Visa Infinite where I earned myself FREE Enrich Miles enough to redeem for a full one-way ticket Business Class ticket (40K EM) or upgrade a return Economy Class ticket (60K EM) KL/Melbourne 🙂
So far over the years, I have bought 5 black color cars (including my son’s latest car).
Click here to see my Black Color Mazda 8 posted at Ringgit Wise Fool. Prior to the Mazda 8, I was chauffeured driven in a Black Volvo XC90. But I “fired” my boss an become an unemployed bum and therefore I had no choice but to “downgrade” myself to a Mazda 8; and in the process of chasing after the Number No.8 for my Mazda 8, I was conned!!! Hahaha.
Click here to my article titled A Little Bit Of This and A Little Bit Of That – Volume 1, Chapter I where I “upgraded” myself by buying a Black Color Mazda 9 in Melbourne. But nowadays my wife and I hardly ever use the car in Melbourne since all my 3 younger children now takes the tramp/train and we can get whatever we want within walking distance from our apartment which is located smacked in the middle of CBD.
Now, if you are really new to my blog and you have attained the level of “chiak bui liow”, I strongly recommend that you click here and read my article titled Spending Children’s Future Inheritance and you will be brainwashed to go burn your Children’s Inheritance so that you will be remembered as a generous parent and more importantly you will not need to dig yourself out of your grave when you see your son(s) spending your hard earned money on someone else’s wife, I am not kidding.
Also, if you have attained the level of “chiak bui liow”, you should also click here and read my article titled The Secret To Eternal Happiness so that you won’t be a “Gong Kia” (stupid person) working to make other people richer. In this article, I will also show that most, if not all, of my readers can be considered as rich people before they die, i.e. amongst the riches 10% people on planet earth. But the moment we die, we are referred to as the nameless “body” and immediately become poor and penniless. And I have a very good advice where I will tell you why you should not ever buy a property in your child’s name in Australia.
Update September 2016 – Upgrading Economy Class to Business Class KL/Melbourne
Effective 1st August 2016, Malaysia Airlines Berhad had suspended the 15% discount when we redeem in full a ticket using Enrich Miles via online.
In late August 2016, Malaysia Airlines was having a sale where a return ticket KL/Melbourne on Business Class cost only RM1598.90 per pax (with 30kg baggage allowance and FREE liquor):
versus AirAsia RM1556.08 per pax (no check in baggage and no FREE liquor).
My wife and youngest daughter will be flying to Melbourne on the second day of Chinese New Year 2017 as my youngest daughter’s High School starts on 31st January 2017. On the other hand, my second son and I, will only be flying into Melbourne after the 9th day of CNY. So, I asked my dad and mum if they want to celebrate “Chap Goh Mei” in Melbourne? And they said okay.
Initially I was thinking of getting my parents the Malaysia Airlines tickets costing RM1598.90 per pax. But after thinking about it, I decided to give them some little bit comfort for the 7 to 8 hours flight by getting them Business Class tickets.
However, in view than MAB has revoked the 15% discount when we book their tickets using Enrich Miles via online, it means that I will need 220,000 Enrich Miles (for 2 return KL/Melbourne on Business Class).
So, I thought I should instead purchase MH Basic tickets and upgrade them to Business Class where I only need to use up 30,000 Enrich Miles one way (total 120,000 Enrich Miles for 2 pax return KL/Melbourne).
First thing first as I taught you guys above, I called Enrich Customer Service to check if there are still seats available for upgrade using Enrich Miles on the intended departure and return dates. And I was told that there were seats available.
Once again, please be reminded that you cannot upgrade an Economy Promo ticket to Business Class. If you see the image below, I chose the night flight out of KLIA instead of the 8.50am flight which is slightly cheaper. If we were to fly in the morning, it means we have to wake up at 5am!!! Therefore, I paid RM4118.80 for 2 pax MH Basic return KL/Melbourne.
After I booked the tickets above, I immediately called Enrich Customer Service to have the tickets upgraded to Business Class. I had to pay additional RM500 for tax (RM250 per pax) which I was aware off as I did ask earlier when checking on seats available for upgrade.
In addition to the above mentioned paragraph, in view that I am using my Enrich Miles to upgrade my parents seats, I had to provide the Enrich Department some documents, i.e. Letter of Consent where I authorized Enrich to deduct 120,000 Enrich Miles from my account , my Passport and my Enrich Card!!! I immediately prepared the letter and scan it together with my Passport and Enrich Card and emailed them to the Enrich Representative who was still on the line.
In total I paid RM4,618.80 for two (2) return Business Class tickets KL/Melbourne for February 2017 by using 120,000 Enrich Miles. If I were to purchase the Business Class tickets for the same flights, it would cost me RM14,095.80 (please refer image below). So, I guess I “saved” or the way I like to put it, I “earned” myself cash back equivalent to RM9,477 by simply using 120,000 Enrich Miles which are totally FREE, i.e. I use my credit cards’ FREE reward points to convert them to Enrich Miles.
With the above, if you want to upgrade an Economy Class ticket to Business Class, here are the steps once again:
- Call Enrich to confirm seat(s) are available for upgrade on the day(s) you intend to fly. Ask if you need to pay additional taxes.
- If your name is not in the same itinerary with the person whom you want to upgrade to Business Class – Scan your Passport, Enrich Card and Letter of Consent. In item 1, also ask them how to draft the Letter of Consent.
- Purchase MH Basic ticket(s).
- Once you booked your MH Basic ticket, immediately call Enrich to upgrade to Business Class.
- The Customer Service Representative will ask you for the documents mentioned in item 2 above if your name is not in the itinerary (Booking Number). Tell them you have them ready and they will then email you where you can reply and forward the necessary documents.
- And since you are on the line with them, you can book your seats too.
